James Cairns, MA
James Cairns is an independent consultant engaging with leading institutions in the international early childhood development ecosystem. His work focuses on facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration, designing and implementing peer learning and leadership development programs, and guiding strategic planning and monitoring, evaluation and learning processes.
James previously served for more than 17 years on the staff of the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. He joined the Center in 2008 to lead the development of its international work. In his most recent role as Sr. Director for Strategic Engagements and Organizational Learning, he led the development and implementation of monitoring, evaluation and learning processes to understand and measure the impact of the Center’s work. He also provided strategic guidance to the Center’s international portfolio and partnerships, including developing strategic collaborations with foundations, international organizations, and academic institutions.
Prior to joining the Center, James served as the Director of Programs at the World Conference of Religions for Peace, and as Director of the Advocacy and Action for Children Program, fostering cooperation among the world’s main religious communities to address critical needs of children. He holds master’s degrees in international relations and theology from Yale University and a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard University
