How Childhood Neglect Harms the Brain

As part of its neuroscience-focused series “Brain Matters,” public radio station WBUR explores the science behind the effects of abuse and neglect on the developing brain. The story features interviews with Center-affiliated faculty member Charles A. Nelson III and Center Director Jack P. Shonkoff [1]. Nelson speaks about his work on how profound early deprivation impairs healthy development, while Shonkoff calls for an urgent public health response to childhood neglect. Excerpts from this piece also appear in a June 26 story [2] from WBUR’s “Radio Boston” that includes a more in-depth interview with Shonkoff.
