Pediatrics needs to move to a new era of childhood policy by balancing enrichment with protection, Center Director Jack Shonkoff said in his plenary session talk for the 2011 American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition in Boston. With new research showing the long-term effects—positive and negative—of early experiences on the body, Shonkoff stressed that an understanding of the biology of adversity needs to be added to the medical home to help protect immature systems in the earliest years of life.
